Learning Chinese

Mandarin Chinese seems to be the language of records: in fact it is the hardest and the most spoken language in the world. It is also considered the language of the future, considering the growing importance of China. With its reputation for intractable difficulty, speaking and writing Chinese fluently is seen as the top of intellectual achievement. The most complicated sides about Mandarin are the written language and the tones (there are four tones and the sense of a word depends on the tone). The easy thing about Mandarin is the syntax. There's no relationship at all between what you hear (the word) and what you write (the character). Every character represents a different word and there is no link between the character and the sound. This means that you have to learn every character one by one, with its pronunciation and meaning.
